Conference like many mid majors is down due to portal and NIL..
one trip through and I have seen each game in person
No team is more athletic than us... that has always been a problem... NMSU in the WAC and ORU in the Summit... always had to "wish" we could keep our athletes on the floor foulwise.
Each team has a flaw... few stud point guards in the conference which is good for us... actually the bigs are decent but could be due to the fact that there are few elite guards.. Mayo and the kid from Denver...
good shooters everywhere which also helps the bigs as well... used to be you could double the post and they were not good enough to continue... now, you can't double the post since they can kick out to the good shooter,,, so they get to go one on one.
The smartest team is St. Thomas... and they can capitalize on defensive mistakes... just not athletic enough to match up if somebody does just a basic game... gotta be quick enough to not foul....
Now looking forward.....Go to Kenpom you can see on the team scouting report that we are improving... gone up about 40 places in 3 weeks... and if you click on "conference play" you can see we have many green categories... big deal... finally, if you look at our experience, the average team has 1.83 years of D1 experience... we have 1.02 years experience ranking us 316... what does that mean... when coach says we are young... he is right...and we are making dramatic moves and improvement as our freshmen are blooming.
I think we have the most depth of any team which should pay off if we play 3 games in 3 days.....
After last night... I think we should "ease" Cameron back in.... he needs to be more urgent since, if he aint shooting or making shots... he is a detriment. Also, a few less minutes for Jamar since he will probably be a 40 minute guy.
Our bigs are an enigma... Jeff is superb defender, Melvyn is what he is, Allan is explosive physically and mentally... his mistakes compound within seconds... and he needs to just simply do what coaches say... NBA scouts were here to watch number zero and they also saw that Baba can guard people and Alan cannot control himself... too bad but he needs to have focus... Tyler listened and climbed out of that rut.. kudos to him.
I think we have best chance of winning the tournament in 20 years just by the league being worse and us being a bit better.
