One day later and I am calmed down...
At this point, mens team is FAR better off than they were a year ago. last year, coahes and players all wanted to get away even though we had many wins.
January 30, Shemarri was in the air and ready to dunk the lob for the win... for second place.
We win at Western but lose Mukeba... that killed us since Jeff had been playing hurt for 3 weeks.
couple tough losses and Shemarri breaks his arm.... enough to give Freshmen a solid reason to surrender... not publicly but there is a way out for the immature... it is not a fault or criticism... just reality for young people. Then an avalanche of pain... Been tough for the Chiefs to win without Mahomes, Kelce, Pacheco.... and that is an 11 man lineup... so more like losing 7 starters on each side of the ball...
Moving on.
Existing guys.
Top
Shemarri... if he improves again as much as last year, he could get NBA looks. He could be 1st team all conference and even POY.... keep working. Improve passing as much as shooting.... defensive stud could be DPOY
Allen .... best player we have had in an age... we need to use him better. He could be a multi-year POY and first teamer.... talent is not a problem. Improve his mid-range arsenal. Could also be enforcer
RayQ. shooter by volume... not good percentage but can get his own shot which is valuable...Also good closer who makes free throws. if he is not getting his own however the time is wasted with the ball in his hand. Decent defender and has a chance at 1st team but remember we would not be a good team if his style made it to 1st team all conference.... needs to improve offensive court awareness, passing, and if you are gonna shoot that d**n much then do it better.... he needs a puppy shock collar... if he dribbles over 4 seconds he gets shocked... haha.
Tyler,,, if you saw him last summer, you know he also has POY possibility and he is his biggest opponent. 20 and 10 is no shock.... but he is still an apple turnover.. He could explode next year... needs to keep focused
jeff.... very solid 1st year. Great rebounding fundamentals. does not bring the ball down.... very critical getting offensive boards. Improve his power moves... his spin move at St. Thomas was incredible but we only saw it once, He needs to make quicker decisions when he gets the ball.
AK..... He needs to play. he is a true leader on the floor and we were a very good team for the couple games we had him.... now mix him in and we will be just that much better.
HELL that is a long list of Top guys....
GOOD GUYS
BABA.... very good defender and he plays with joy in his heart.... needs to make 10,000 3s on his own this summer... 1000 a week for 10 weeks. All defense and honorable mention ceiling
JEVIN... Needs to be more Assertive with his drive to the basket and trust himself. VERY good defender for a freshman. Best positional player on the team and trusts his defensive footwork... and a guy that wants to be coached. Could be All Defense and honorable mention... if he does the work to become a man in his fitness and improves his offensive trust... he will be invaluable... like #11 is now for ORU. Super solid and stable... which you need in a storm. Could also be enforcer.
Wait and see.
TWINS... lumped together. soft, need core strength, need to make shots this summer and develop an arsenal...Need to practice shots they will shoot, did I mention get stronger... listen and learn more from the coaches... get stronger.... add toughness and hand strength... be decisive and finally... get stronger.
SIDY.... weak and out of shape . Needs conditioning, weight training, and needs to focus on 3 skills.... I will choose here but there are too many skills to mention..... 1. protect the basket.... learn to block shots and get deflections with quick hands, 2. Run and dunk off the lob.... let the passer lead him to basket and he catches and dunks, and 3. Skyhook. He well never be strong enough to get 4 feet from basket and needs a shot that can't be blocked even though he is weak. He can jump but is not explosive quickly... the skyhook is a stable and accurate shot and not blockable if done correctly... it would give him an offensive chance in the half court.... but a million miles to go... would be a good option for a red shirt. He needs to be sponsored by Golds Gym and Joe Weeders weight gain formula.
Red Shirts...
JAYLEN.... super smart and could be a solution for PG.. he can score and will compete according to coaches...
Cole .... has made the most progress and heard a staff member say he has all the D1 skills.. wow what a surprise... but don't know much more than that.
Timothy... is it possible he comes back... have not seen him during recovery.. don't know where he fits as he is not a PG but... we can hope...
Probably gone
Emmanouil... I love the kid and he takes extra shots after every game and he was always willing... just don't know if coaches like him enough to allow him to play into the system..
SAM.... love him too but probably gonna be D2 guy....
Those last 2 guys were our best 2 passers... on a bad passing team.
NEED
PG that passes and sees the floor
Post player that can guard all 5 in this shooting league... Jeff does not step out much... then limit Jeff to about 20 minutes a game
DEFENSE
we are solid there but could add a couple of wrinkles to increase pressure once we can have all these long bodies be able to play... do you really want Jeff or Jevin, or Allen providing any perimeter pressure or tough post play if you have to replace with SIDY or the TWINS... no. too big of a dropoff.
OFFENSE
Look at the list of players we have and look at our offense... our "O" is designed for a couple star players to take most all of the shots of dribble and go to foul line. Our stars are not that good to provide 60 a night...We don't pass well from the traditional PG setup... but we have some guys that could pass.
We also don't do the concepts that break down a defense... touch the paint and ball reversals(passes across court to other side) These actions breakdown the defense by making them retreat to basket or shift sides... when we do the weave out top... our players move but the ball does not... stays in relative middle... not good. I think the offense should go through Allen and he should be placed between free throw line and 3pt. line. Each possession get the ball to him and he kicks it out one side or the other or drives on the slower players. Once they collapse to him...the perimeter and corners are open... look how many times we run out the clock and are still heavily guarded 25 feet from the basket....
Coaching... we are so solid there and good to build a program... I am sure Marv has a good bench as people leave for other positions. He now knows this is a shoot the 3 league and we will have to compete on the perimeter by all 5 players.
