No recruit is coming to UMKC until we prove we can win something. KC is front runner town, UMKC basketball has roughly 35 years of failure in D1. Hopefully Menzies is on the path to progress. I prefer kids from AZ that can play to local recruits that should be at D2 schools.

Rooinblue - 100% agree. Let’s continue picking up talent in Arizona, Juco, and International. Once we get to the tournament (next year) and compete, everything will change. Until that happens, we will continue to miss out on local players due to our history, local reputation, McCollum, etc. In addition, this coaching staff won’t sign DII talent just to have a KC presence.

And honestly, I don’t expect this staff to prioritize a KC presence. Menzies has a history of finding diamonds in the rough in all sorts of places, namely international. However, the portal and NIL has shifted things and now JUCO seems to be the route to go.

South Dakota and the Roos are the only teams not importing from the portal... is that a good thing? We may be rated 1 and 2 this fall

Re Missouri Valley Conference
Matt Brown, the "Extra Points" columnist, writes:
It’s early, but none of the industry folks I’ve spoken to so far expect UMKC to be a likely candidate to join the conference. Don’t be surprised if the conference ends up talking to more folks outside their more traditional midwestern-ish geographic footprint.

The MVC nor any other conference will take UMKC seriously until UMKC shows that they are taking athletics seriously. Build the 6K-7.5K arena, add baseball (1K seat ballpark) and finance the programs the way they should be financed and UMKC will be more attractive to other conferences. If UMKC has had a change of heart and is content to be in the Summit (which I am perfectly fine with unless the conference gets raided), they still need to build a 5K arena with modern amenities for the athletes just to recruit to the necessary level to compete for conference championships regularly.

Utah Valley appears to be looking at the addition of football. They may not be in a hurry to bail on the WAC.

In that case, they may look to follow the Texas schools to the Southland or even the Big Sky. FB might actually give them added incentive to stay in the WAC. They would have a shot at an automatic FCS playoff bid, via the WAC-ASUN football alliance. Plus, they could play in-state rivals Utah Tech and Southern Utah in football.

Stephen F. Austin is the latest to defect to the Southland Conference. At this point, could Utah Valley remain in the WAC even if they wanted to?

Stephen F. Austin is the latest to defect to the Southland Conference. At this point, could Utah Valley remain in the WAC even if they wanted to? I don't see why not. As far as NCAA automatic bids are concerned, bylaw 20.02.5.1 appears to allow men's basketball autobids for conferences with as few as seven members. At the moment, I don't think WAC membership is slated to dip below seven. I won't get into the WAC's football playoff situation, except to say that they will be ok. Obviously, seven is a substandard membership number. I think they will have to make some calls to D-II schools. Would Augustana be interested? Augie is way outside the WAC's geographic footprint, but in order to survive with automatic bids, the WAC may accept some outliers. They might end up looking like the 90s Mid-Continent (more like all-over-the-continent) Conference.

Here's a recent article on Augustana's quest for a D-I conference invitation by the end of the decade (per its strategic plan), with a focus is on the Summit League. I thought this was particularly interesting: Remember the USD fan who didn’t care if Augie ever joins the Summit party?
He did mention one caveat.
”If it would help the tournament stay here in Sioux Falls, so be it,” Asmus said. “Because I don’t think anybody from around these parts wants to see it end up in Kansas City, or Omaha, or Minneapolis.”
The Summit League Tournament’s contract with Sioux Falls expires after next year’s event, with an option for 2026

I have no interest in the MVC. It no longer has Wichita State, Creighton, Loyola or Missouri St. Sorry you feel that way. For what it's worth, Indiana State was slotted into the field of 68 this past season until the biggest "bid stealer" scenario occurred. 5 teams "stole" bids which caused Indiana State to be relegated to the NIT. This would've given the Valley two teams in the Dance and the Sycamores probably could've won a game or two. Yeah, I know,...woulda, coulda, shoulda. Pertaining to 3 of the schools mentioned above, only Creighton has maintained their quality of play since leaving the Valley. The jury is still out on Loyola. The Wheatshockers see now, AAC TV money nothwithstanding, that the Athletic is not the league they signed up with just a few short years ago. Cincy, Houston, SMU, and Central Florida all left the Athletic, leaving it a shell of itself. The conference finished ranked 10 in rpi behind the Valley, while the NET rankings were reversed (AAC-9, Valley-10). The Valley actually appears to be on an upward trend while the reverse is the case for the AAC. Only time will tell, but I'll take my chances on the MVC becoming a multi-bid league once again. The league got an influx of good to really good coaches this past offseason and the portal has yielded pretty good finds for member institutions. It's too bad you guys won't be able to get that arena off the ground. That would've put you guys in a much better position going forward than most of the expansion candidates. Kansas City is right behind Arlington as the market with population growth for regular student recruitment. To pass some time during the offseason, check out this Valley expansion video from D1 360. it's a tad over an hour, dealing with 19 potential Valley expansion candidates, including Kansas City, whose analysis begins at the 45:20 mark.
