McCollum won our beauty contest three years ago.
Tate is a former MU player and a big St. Louis area recruiter.
Smart has been a 3x NBA head coach (Warriors, Kings, Cavs). At Arkansas, his base salary is reportedly $200k. Famously successful college playing career at a Kansas JC and Indiana.

No space for dangerous, non-conformist answers such as "none of the above."

The new woman’s Coach will make $345k annually plus incentives. That precedence and the fact that we have now put the program in such a hole will cost us a lot to bring someone in. Better hope we are able to get Billy’s buyout because I assume a competent Coach for the men’s job will ask for $500,000+. (Kareem was 250k and Billy was 350k).
I really hope Dr. Martin and the University do this right. If not, we really do need to get out of D1.

$345K for a women's coach 🤑🤮🤑🤮. Is this the real world?!?! That's nearly what SEC coaches are paid. It's time Raj... Call Reggie Theus and let him tell Brandon he's fired.

Mendies and Steve Payne have coached at this level and Mendiez did very well... he was mediocre at UNLV but not fully vetted... he had advantages of being the best team in the league and could wait a year or two to develop guys, use more red shirts etc.... but he always had a stable of very good players... even though those 7'3" twins were just terrible. He recruits the planet.

Could not disagree more on Menzies. He is used to having the best team, which he would not have here. And it is much easier to recruit to steam that has a history of winning conference titles, which he would not have here. I do not want to hire an old coach (Weber) looking to bank retirement money and we are desperate to have relevance so we hire a name coach who is looking for a soft landing into retirement.

I think Payne might have been a solution in late March for continuity purposes, but I think it might be too late now. Is Menzies the dynamic, charismatic guy that we need? I don’t know if he meets the qualifications under “the rule of 28”. 🙂
I think we need a big name hire to save credibility, and/or lure McCollum with a big pay raise and give him time to build a winner.

We need some charisma to go along with the coaching.... We have other parts of the program going.... Because Z was known in town and he had some charisma... when the team got good, the community latched on... now when we are good we have to shout for attention. Menzies is a funny guy and nice, Steve is a good guy with a little southern style, I have not met Keith Smart, Watson seemed mature beyond his years and have had a few conversations... I think the ship has sailed already for the NWMSU guy and for the KSTATE guy.... they don't want it... I am tired of training coaches so they make their big career mistakes here.. Each starting coach has done it and the boo boos are too numerous to mention... Billy had a relatively smooth start since he had some experience. I think an older coach concerned with Legacy would be a good choice... gotta finish with what is best for the sport and his legacy.... I don't want a guy who is worried about our arena... I want a guy who wants his name on our next one. Turgeon I have heard needs a lot of attention. We need the guy with the fire and passion to take our whole PROGRAM to the next level.... he could be 65, or 35... but he cant be a dictator... he will need to work with people including our community, the faculty, the parents, the ex players who have NEVER been embraced by any staff... lotsa fences to mend... don't need Mr. Bigtime in here complaining about the facilities but would love Mr. Bigtime here if he is all about Kansas City and how great things can be here. Would love if we would all just jump on board the next choice .... and give him the best chance anyone has ever had... get rid of grudges and give that extra support that will take us to new levels.

Suspected that would be the case with McCollum and Weber.
And it does seem that Turgeon picked up Larry Brown's habit of Kvetching about the small stuff. That approach works fine with a major program...

Weber would be a huge breakthrough as his SIU teams were terrific fun... but he probably won't be the guy. His legacy is in place and it is a strong one... I do like the idea of a guy cementing or building a legacy instead of a resume'. MCCollum is a big risk on his part... if he is moving to D1, I think it should be with a step above here... where there is little risk of a disaster and he keeps his Mid Missouri legacy in place. So if Mizzou offers him... he goes... but not for the smaller D1 schools.

After sleeping on it.... and a trip to Wikipedia.. (I know Wiki is messed up but I doubt the lefties have gotten to the point of poisoning basketball information) Menzies is a 60% winner, he did win 20 games at UNLV, his finishes in the mountain west went from 11th to 7th to 4th.... He has at least 1 player in the NBA, he has been to the tourney several times, won lotsa conference tourney games, is 60 so this could be a last hurrah, he plays all D1 opponents so we don't waste our money on Kansas Christian, he is nationally known, and I think the Valley would like the choice.... AND he is funny and likable. To be honest, my wife (who goes to all the games) was fine with Billy leaving... she did not have a good "vibe" about him... So on the list for me it is Menzies since I don't know SMART and Watson may have too much culture shock coming from Toronto NBA Life. The only downside is no NBA experience.... but I think we would love that pedigree here in KC... and to be honest, it would be the most successful coach ever hired in our history in any sport... Now, I don't know how he is on the rumor list... will he take the job? Do coaches just not want to come here? Do we have an AD that can convince a proven winner to give our place his best shot? Let's see.

It goes without saying that the next coach probably won't be from our list. Likely a D-I assistant. Hopefully, no one who reminds us of Matt Brown.

Payne would be my choice; I expanded on why in the other thread. However, if Weber is interested like has been speculated, I think he’d have to be the choice.
One coach not mentioned that I think would do well is Rutgers assistant head coach Brandin Knight. Longtime Pitt player and assistant who has been part of the turn around in New Jersey. He’s considered a rising star by many in the business and almost landed the Saint Peter’s job. Only problem is that he has never coached outside of the northeast region, meaning all his connections are there. There’s also the fact that he could likely wait for a better opportunity to arise.
