I'm not surprised. The money crisis in 2017 required trimming 10% of the budget ($1.5 M). Moving back to Swinney helped, smaller footprint conference will help, selling more tickets to local fans will help. I feel bad for the WAC. But UMKC needs to take care of itself right now. All in all, I'm bullish on the Roos' future.
As much as I dislike the Summit, I think this is a good move. At a minimum I'm glad all the speculation is over. Now how do we get into the Missouri Valley?
You and I are in agreement. This is like nasty tasting medicine that will make the Roos healthier in the long run. Get rid of Oral Roberts, and it's not such a bad conference...more potential than the WAC. But recruiting players for bus trips to Siberia will a challenge.
So, yay! We're in a Midwestern conference that actually, kinda, sorta follows the actual path of the Missouri River...the MVC has the name, but we're joining the genuine article. At any rate, we won't be jumping Murray State in that line for Valley membership any time soon. And the MVC seems content with 10 members.
Some schools might support a member swap between the Summit and Valley that would segregate scholarship football schools from everyone else. But would the NCAA allow it to happen without withholding everyone's March Madness money? I give it about a 5 percent chance of happening.
Drake has been a member for over 100 years; Bradley is another longstanding Valley member. The Drake/Bradley conference gets to keep the MVC name, and would continue to operate the non-scholarship Pioneer Football League.

The Summit League would take everyone from the Missouri Valley Football Conference (Horizon member Youngstown St. would be an associate member), meaning the Summit would sponsor football.
